To ensure that you get the most out of your V-Belts, it is important that you store them correctly. If V-Belts are stored in favourable conditions, then they can retain their initial serviceability and dimensions. So how do you ensure you get a longer life out of your V-Belts?
V-Belts should be stored off of the floor and away from moisture. This is commonly achieved by hanging the belts on crescent shaped pegs or pin racks. If you have a slightly longer V-Belt, then we would suggest loosely coiling the belt so that it reduces the space needed for storage, while keeping the belt distortion free.
Variable speed belts should be stored differently as they are less resistant to distortion than V-Belts. Placing the variable speed belts on shelves, as opposed to on pegs or pins, prevents possible distortion that can occur by hanging.
If stored correctly, the belts can achieve a shelf life of up to 6 years. To achieve this, the belts must be stored in a cool, dry place that does not exceed 70% humidity or temperatures of 30°C. If the belts are exposed to unfavourable conditions, then the shelf life of the belts can reduce rapidly. Under rough estimates, an additional 20°C above the standard temperature range can result in the shelf life of the belts being halved.
We also recommend relaxing belt tension if a drive is not being used for prolonged periods of time. The necessary tension should then be reapplied before the drive is used again.
